WOMEN'S ISSUES UPDATES!

President Obama Announces Supreme Court Nominee
In a historic nomination, President Obama nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court.  Judge Sotomayor is the first Latina to be nominated to the Supreme Court.  While this nomination has its supporters and opponents, President Obama's choice is a strong message that women's and minorities' voices are highly valued in this administration.  For information about Judge Sotomayor's background and qualifications, visit The White House Press Office.

Abortion Provider Killed in Kansas
On Sunday, May 31, abortion provider Dr. George Tiller was shot and killed in his church in Wichita, Kansas.  The suspect in custody is associated with anti-choice organizations.  Dr. Tiller provided abortion services for women in need of important medical care at vulnerable times in their lives and was often a target of the anti-choice community.  Pro-choice communities across the nation have expressed sadness and anger, and mobilized in vigils and rallies.
There will be a vigil organized by the Illinois Choice Action Team on Friday.  See the Community News section for details.

FY2010 Budget - Illinois
The Chicago Foundation for Women released a woman-centered analysis of the Governor Quinn's proposed Illinois FY2010 budget, including recommendations to improve the lives of women.  To read the analysis, visit www.cfw.org/Illinois2010.

FY2010 Budget - Federal
President Obama's proposed Federal FY2010 budget includes no funding for abstinence-only-until-marriage programs!  Instead, he includes funds for comprehensive sexuality education.  This is a huge victory for teens who deserve access to comprehensive, medically accurate education.  However, this is only in the proposed budget.  To help ensure it gets passed, you may visit Advocates for Youth and click on "End Funding for Abstinence-Only Programs."
To learn more about the work being done to encourage comprehensive sexuality education nationally, visit www.siecus.org or www.advocatesforyouth.org

Craig's List Removes Erotic Services Section
Amid pressure and controversy, Craig's List, a popular tool to find anything from personal ads to free furniture agreed to remove its Erotic Services section during May.  Critics of this area of Craig's List have argued that the section promotes illegal activity, including the sex trade.  Instead, Craig's List will have an Adult Services section, for which the company will hire additional staff to monitor the content.
