June 11, 6:00-8:00 PM: General Membership Summer Mixer
Just because it seems like it's only early spring outside is no reason not to celebrate summer! We relaxed with a few drinks and updated the group on the work around the International Violence Against Women Act. A few important points:

  • The Act no longer exists--we need to lobby to have it reintroduced to the Senate or the House of Representatives
  • Barbara Boxer and Carolyn Maloney are cosponsoring the International Women's Freedom Act, which does not have a lot of the elements that attracted the group to the IVAWA.
  • Queens is one of the most diverse counties in the country, with a large immigrant population--naturalized immigrants, particularly women, are extremely contientious voters.
