YWTF-NYC, the foremost organization on New York City’s women in their 20s and 30s, empowers younger women in the New York metro area politically, professionally, and personally by building a grassroots community that allows a space for younger women to learn about and take leadership on issues that matter most to them.
Since the 2000 election, young adults—especially younger women—have become more involved in the political process and more aware of its effects on their daily lives. In 2008, young voters have the opportunity to make a real difference in the direction our country takes during the next four years. YWTF-NYC is taking action through the Voting Vixen campaign to make sure young adults know their voting rights and responsibilities and are empowered to make the changes that are important to them in the White House and in their local communities. Stay tuned for upcoming Voting Vixen activities.
The chapter also runs a monthly book club, that broadens our members politically and culturally, provides a safe space for discussion of the issues raised, and is a potential launching pad for future programs and intiatives.
YWTF-NYC believes that younger women are a valuable resource in their communities and is in the beginning stages of creating a mentorship program, in which younger women will act as mentors to teen women and girls. Please contact us if you would like to be involved.
Be sure to check out our Meetup and Facebook pages to connect with other members.
CHAPTER CHATTER:
Book Club Meeting: Jane Sexes It Up, edited by Merri Lisa Johnson
Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 7:00 PM (Tea Spot, 127 Macdougal St
corner of W 3rd)
Sex, desire, and feminism: what better discussion topics for a hot August evening?
Join the YWTF-NYC Book Club as we delve into Jane Sexes It Up: True Confessions of Feminist Desire, a collection of essays that examine sexuality, female agency, and third wave feminism. How can we be "sex-positive" in a culture that decidedly isn't? Can sex work be an empowering, feminist act? How do our fantasies affect our politics (and vice versa)? And porn--what about that?
Voting Vixens and Spoken Word
Wednesday, September 10, 2008, 7:00 PM (Nuyorican Poets Cafe, 236 East 3rd Street, NYC)
A night of amazing female and male spoken word artists. Please come celebrate the Voting Vixens Campaign and empower young women to get involved in the political process.
